Sovereign status will be confirmed: Anderson

Euahlayi man Michael Anderson says he will have confirmed Indigenous sovereign status within Australia in the next few days as his fact-finding mission in Europe continues.

The last survivor of the four Aboriginal men who set up the Tent Embassy in Canberra, Mr Anderson is currently in London to determine the current legal standing of an 1875 British statute that recognizes Aboriginal sovereignty over their lands.

In a Human Rights Day address to Occupy London Stock Exchange protesters, Mr Anderson said he now believes Australia’s claim to Indigenous land, water and natural wealth is “on shaky ground.”

Michael Anderson:

Unfortunately, our people did not understand the Wester education system, nor the way in which that law impacted on us and gave us those rights.  So, without them really fully understanding the language of the English, we were not able to understand - the old people were not able to understand - the significance of what was given to us and what was recognised.

Voice ends.
