Information-seeking trip to Europe focuses on sovereignty law

A Euahlayi man who set up the Aboriginal Embassy in Canberra in 1972 is now taking his fight for Indigenous rights to Europe.

Michael Anderson has travelled to England, and will also visit the International Court of Justice in the Hague, saying he wants to open up discussions to challenge Australian sovereignty over traditional lands.

He says he wants to establish the legal and political standing of a British statute that recognizes the continuance of Aboriginal sovereignty and dominion over their lands.

Michael Anderson:

My intention is - I don't have authority nor power to conclude anything on behalf of our people in this country.  We have many nations and each of those nations will be required to do their own thing.  But, one thing is for sure, I need to find out what the legal status of this is, find out what the political status is, and I will be certainly bringing that information back home and spreading it around this country.

Voice ends.
