The Northern Territory Government has thrown its support behind the Federal Government's 'Stronger Futures' bill which was introduced into Parliament last week.
The Federal Government says it will replace the Federal Intervention. The legislation will continue practices used under the Intervention , in particular the controversial income management scheme, where parents have welfare benefits withdrawn if their children don't go to school. But Intervention Rollback Group spokesperson Lauren Mellor says they're deeply disappointed in the Territory Government's announcement of support. Lauren Mellor: I think it's a very backward step for the NT Government because they've actually spent the last few years talking about the lack of partnership with Aboriginal people that's gone on with the Intervention - the top-down approach and the fact that it's taking control away from local communities. But the NT Government now has come onside with what is largely a locking-in of the key Intervention measures for the next ten years. There's not a lot in this legislation that's changed from what Howard proposed in 2007 unfortunately. Voice ends. |
